MailPolice MX Service FAQ

Return to FAQ

What is the MX service?

MailPolice MX provides protection for existing mail servers by intercepting e-mail before reaching its final destination.

How does the MX service work?

After a simple DNS change, all e-mail goes through MailPolice mail servers before it is delivered to your existing mail server.

This process removes the burden on your existing mail server of handling excess e-mail, processing e-mail attacks, and other nuissances.

(see the animated diagram)

How does MailPolice protect against spam and viruses?

All e-mail passes through a number of stages to identity its threat level. As each e-mail passes through each stage, a number of techniques are applied to the e-mail to calculate its spam or virus probability. This approach gives MailPolice the ability to block up to 99% of all spam before reaching the destination mail server.

Does mail stay on MailPolice servers?

MailPolice acts as a proxy for your mail server. Only quarantined/blocked e-mail stays on MailPolice servers. All other mail is passed on to your mail server.

Does MailPolice support secure message delivery?

Yes. MailPolice supports SMTP Transport Layer Security (TLS). This allows MailPolice to encrypt e-mail between other mail servers that support this feature. This means, e-mail can be securely transmitted between its source and destination.

How often is MailPolice protection updated?

MailPolice is constantly updated. By using a network of "traps" placed all over the Internet, MailPolice is able to analyse new threats before they become trouble. Whenever a new type of threat is discovered, protection is put into place.
